The official introduction of a group of non-resident Montserratians who want to support the growth of the island took place this week.
Premier Joseph E Farrell, Governor Sarah Tucker and other well-wishers attended the Village664 grand launch on Thursday, 14 March, at Good Life restaurant in Little Bay.
They both welcomed the new opportunity for closer collaboration with the diaspora as well as improved access to their assistance and talents.
Group chair Derek Osbourne, during an interview on ZJB Radio introducing the group this week, said the goal is to bridge the gap between organisations doing good work on island and those living overseas.
“Whether it be a financial give, whether it be a time give to help build an association, whether we serve on a board of a [non-] government agency, or just to give support,” he said.
Village664 was founded when members of Montserrat’s diaspora agreed on the need for a coordinated approach to help in the sustainable growth and development of the island.
“Within our diaspora lies a treasure trove of talent and resources poised to contribute to Montserrat’s prosperity,” a press release said.
“Yet, there’s been a missing link – a unified entity to effectively coordinate our collective efforts.
“Village664 steps in as that crucial link, fostering collaboration and support for both established and emerging NGOs dedicated to positive change on the island.”
The group has been meeting for a year and a half so far, has a board of five people, and about 50 members – but the aim is to increase that number.
It invites every Montserratian at home and in the diaspora, friends of Montserrat and visitors, to commit to Montserrat’s “radiant future”.
They can do this by becoming a subscription member of the organisation, sharing ideas and experience, making a financial donation or volunteering time and expertise.
“Join us in our endeavour to transform Montserrat into the ultimate ‘choice destination’ – a place we proudly call home, a tourist haven, and a hub for specialised investments,” Village664 said.
