Sheviyona Thomas wins Junior Calypso Competition 2024

Talented performer Sheviyona Thomas, who also goes by ‘Calypso Blessings’, wowed judges again at this year’s Junior Calypso Competition.

She walked away with first prize of EC$1,200 for her song about parents not listening to their children, which she dedicated to “all the youths who are not being heard”.

This is the third time she has been named ‘Junior Calypso Monarch’, making history in Montserrat.

The contest took place during the Heritage Day entertainment following the St Patrick’s Festival parade on Monday, 18 March.

It was a highly entertaining evening as several young calypso artists took to the stage accompanied by the Black Rhythm Band to showcase their impressive skills.

The judges selected their favourites by evaluating the lyrics, melody, rendition and presentation of the performances.

They each won a trophy as well as EC$750 for first runner up, EC$500 for second runner up and EC$250 for third runner up. All the remaining performers received EC$150 for taking part.

“The Montserrat Arts Council would like to congratulate all Junior Calypsonians on their performances as we look forward to your continuous development in this cultural art form.

“Thank you to all committee members, staff, parents and patrons for making this event possible,” Montserrat Arts Council said in a Facebook post following the competition.
