Gov’t extends $200 flight subsidy to September and October

Single flights between Montserrat and Antigua will be EC$200 cheaper for passengers throughout September and October – or $400 cheaper for a return.

In a press release on 26 August, the government said it has extended the subsidy that it promised to pay to airlines flying the route during June, July and August.

The two airlines that fly between Montserrat and Antigua are Fly Montserrat and SVG Air.

“The airlines will quote the reduced fare to travellers and then claim the rebate from the Access Division,” Permanent Secretary Daphne Cassell told Montserrat Focus earlier this summer.

However, in July, Paul Gravel, managing director of SVG Air, said during an interview on ZJB Radio that the government had not subsidised any of the company’s flights as promised.

“They’ve talked about it, but they haven’t stepped up to do it,” he said at the time.

The subsidy was originally introduced just weeks after the Access Division announced on 30 April that the ferry service between Antigua to Montserrat had concluded.

In the recent press release, the government thanked everyone “for their patience and understanding” while it tries to provide reliable and safe access to and from Montserrat.

Customers who have already confirmed bookings before the implementation of this initiative will need to send a refund request by email to the Office of the Premier at [email protected]

The email should include their ticket receipt and itinerary, and an indication of their preferred payment method, the press release said.
