Montserrat National Youth Parliament gifts 350 books to Brades school

Montserrat National Youth Parliament, in collaboration with US-based organisation The Leaders Readers Network, has given more than 350 new books to Brades Primary and Nursery School.

The handover ceremony took place on 6 November in the presence of Governor Sarah Tucker, Minister of Education Ingrid Buffonge, and Charliena White, former speaker of the Montserrat Legislative Assembly.

St Luke Le Blanc, youth premier in the Montserrat National Youth Parliament, said the book donation marked a significant milestone in promoting literacy on the island.

He described the handover as a “true community effort” and said the dedication and hard work of all involved made the initiative a reality.

The Leaders Readers Network is dedicated to working with school leaders to help improve literacy and educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Through book donations, community engagement, and educational initiatives, it works to provide equitable access to learning materials, inspiring young minds to develop a love for reading and learning.

Le Blanc has worked with organisation in the past and upon joining the youth parliament asked the director if he wanted to extend the organisation’s reach.

He agreed, so the youth parliamentarians worked with partners Montserrat Shipping, the Ministry of Education and the Legislature office to bring the initiative to fruition.

“This collaboration represents a significant achievement in our mission to foster education,” Le Blanc told Montserrat Focus.

He added that various measures could be implemented in schools in Montserrat to promote a love of reading.

“I encourage teachers to dedicate at least 30 to 45 minutes daily for students to read three to five pages and share their understanding,” he said.

“This practice not only cultivates a love for reading but also enhances critical thinking skills among our youth.”
