Affordable plants available for sale on National Tree Planting Day

Residents can buy a range of affordable plants this December as part of a government scheme to improve food security, boost erosion control, and beautify the island.

The 34th annual National Tree Planting Day, organised by the Department of Environment, is scheduled for Wednesday, 11 December.

Plant distribution will start at 7am at the ministry’s compound in Brades. Buyers are reminded to bring cardboard boxes for safely transporting their plants.

Despite this year’s drought conditions, the plant nursery has propagated over 1,200 plants across 22 varieties, including 16 fruit trees and six ornamental plants.

The public can purchase three plants for $10, with options including bread-nut, sugar apple, Surinam cherry, spice guava, and soursop.

In addition, 17 other plant varieties, such as pineapple, coconut, breadfruit, grafted orange, tea bush, and grafted mango, will be sold separately for prices ranging from $5 to $25.

The event aims to encourage environmental responsibility and community involvement, resulting in lasting green spaces.
