Those wishing to help a young Montserrat man in urgent need of lifesaving medical treatment can now donate online from anywhere in the world.
Friends and family of 20-year-old Azaar Mitchell have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for an urgently needed pacemaker and related healthcare.
Generous well-wishers have already contributed US$1,010, but further support is needed to reach the target of $14,000.
In mid-December Montserrat Focus published a story detailing Azaar’s struggles with a serious heart condition and his step-mother’s plea for public support.
The article went viral, receiving 167 shares on Facebook, and prompted members of Montserrat’s community at home and abroad to look for an easy way to donate.
As a result, a page was set up on an online crowdfunding website, which now enables people worldwide to contribute to the cause.
Organiser Stacey Jordan explains that Azaar has endured debilitating symptoms, including fainting, headaches, shortness of breath, and chest pain, for four years.
His condition remained undiagnosed until September, when his heart stopped. This left him hospitalised for two weeks.
Azaar was referred to a medical facility in Jamaica for further tests, which confirmed that he requires a pacemaker and associated medical care.
Costs for this treatment are projected at about EC$90,000 or US$34,000 – an overwhelming expense for his family.
“We are asking for your support to cover the cost of the pacemaker, medical procedures, and recovery care that will give Azaar a chance at life,” Jordan says.
Appropriate healthcare will allow Azaar, who is known for his exceptional musical talent and dedication to his community, to return to a fulfilling life in Montserrat.
“Azaar’s life is at a critical crossroad, and your support can make all the difference,” Jordan adds.
“Let’s come together to help this talented young man overcome his health challenges and continue to inspire Montserrat and beyond with his music and resilience.”
