Diaspora event to merge with Montserrat Calabash Festival

The 2024 Montserrat diaspora symposium will be integrated into the week-long Montserrat Calabash Festival this summer.

Montserrat Tourism Division rescheduled the event, originally planned for 4-8 March, as part of plans to revitalise one of the island’s premier cultural celebrations.

Division director Rosetta West-Gerald, in a press release, said the change gives organisers additional time to plan a more robust diaspora event and enhance the festival.

It will also give the global Montserratian community an opportunity to enjoy the rich culture and heritage of the island, she added in a government press release.

Members of the hospitality community established the the island’s annual summer festival in July 2006.

Ever since, it has featured a diverse array of activities, including a national lecture, fashion show, arts and craft exhibits, and a food fair.

The festival culminates with the Produced in Montserrat Expo (PRIME), showcasing locally created goods and services.

In the press release, Premier Joseph E Farrell emphasised the continued importance of engaging with the diaspora.

“Our diaspora represents an invaluable connection to our heritage and a vital source of support for our island’s development,” he said.

Montserrat Tourism Division apologised for any inconvenience caused by the rescheduling.
