King Charles III sends well wishes to Montserrat for St Patrick’s Day

King Charles III has sent a letter to Governor Sarah Tucker, extending well wishes to Montserrat for St Patrick’s Day and the year ahead.

This marks the second time he has sent greetings to the island on its public holiday since his coronation in May 2023.

The letter reads: “As you and the people of Montserrat celebrate the auspicious occasion of St Patrick’s Day, my wife and I have great pleasure in conveying our warmest congratulations to your premier, and to the people of Montserrat.

“I cherish greatly the strong ties between us and know that we will continue working together on important global issues, including climate change and the environmental issues.

“The community’s passion to preserve local culture and work to protect its marine environment and rich biodiversity will create an enduring legacy for future generations.

“My wife and I would like to take this opportunity to send our very best wishes for the year ahead.”

The letter, sent on 17 March, is signed by ‘Charles R’ which stands for Charles Rex, the Latin version of King Charles.

Montserrat’s St Patrick’s Festival began on 8 March with a vibrant launch event filled with dance, music, inspiring speeches and the ceremonial lighting of the symbolic flame.

It included events such as the Heritage Day and Junior Calypso Monarch and is scheduled to conclude on 17 March with the St Patrick’s Day jouvert and St Patrick’s Day parade.

Montserrat is the only place outside of mainland Ireland where St Patrick’s Day is recognised as a public holiday.
