Animal welfare group seeks funds to rehome shelter dogs in USA

The Montserrat Animal Protection Society (MAPS) is seeking donations to support the transportation of rescue dogs to the United States for adoption.

One of the dogs that will benefit from the fundraiser is Rocky (pictured), who has already been vaccinated and neutered, and is adjusting to life beyond the shelter.

With support from donors, Rocky is set to to be rehomed in the US early this year.

“As he prepares for his trip abroad, Rocky is spending time with a foster family, being introduced to a travel crate, and overcoming his fear of ceiling fans, riding in cars, and encounters with unknown dogs.

“He’s already warmed up to treats, walking in a harness, and the occasional joy of air conditioning,” a Facebook post from the animal welfare group said on 31 December.

So far Montserrat Animal Protection Society has raised US$700, but members hope that with further financial support it will be able to re-home many more animals like Rocky.

“We are so grateful for your support. Rocky is too,” the post said.

The Atlanta Humane Society is helping with fundraising through its website. To donate the public can click here.

“MAPS greatly appreciates the help it is receiving from Atlanta Humane Society and Dogs and Cats of Antigua,” the group said.

“These incredible organisations do great work in the world and are sharing their time and knowledge with us.

“MAPS also is very grateful for the assistance provided by the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Montserrat in making this transport effort possible.”

Montserrat Animal Protection Society was formed in 2001 to look after lost, abandoned and mistreated animals in Montserrat.

The group’s shelter in Salem is currently housing about 13 dogs and one cat.
