Antigua and Barbuda PM pays tribute to Justin ‘Hero’ Cassell

Antigua and Barbuda’s prime minister Gaston Browne paid tribute to Justin ‘Hero’ Cassell, who he called an “iconic figure”, on Monday, 4 March.

Eighty-year-old Cassell, an agriculturist, award-winning calypso musician, radio host and former politician, died after an illness in the United Kingdom on 5 February.

In his tribute, prime minister Gaston Browne wrote:

“I have sadly learned of the passing of Justin ‘Hero’ Cassell of Montserrat, a pioneer and a winner of more calypso crowns in the Emerald Isle than any other competitor.

“He was the brother of Alphonsus ‘Arrow’ Cassell, and he provided many songs to the repertoire of the most successful OECS calypsonian.

“They were both iconic figures in the contemporary Caribbean soca music genre.

“The cultural divide between Antigua and Montserrat has historically been narrowed by the very close relations between many interconnected families, in both island-countries.

“Calypsonians from Montserrat have performed in Antigua, sharpening their skills; and the reverse has become commonplace, with Antiguan calypsonians.

“I have held, in very high esteem, the talents displayed by Hero, which I absolutely adored and admired.

“I am especially thankful to Hero for his penmanship of several of my campaign songs that are still relevant, more than one decade after they were first composed.

“‘Gaston, He’s the Best, the Best, the Best for City West’ is among the longest lasting.

“He became well-known for his mega hit ‘Tiny Winey’ and his contribution to Arrow’s ‘Hot Hot Hot’ turned the hit into a soca anthem.

“We enjoyed a very close relationship for more than two decades. In the latter two years, as he experienced challenges with his health, we were in very close touch.

“He journeyed to the United Kingdom for treatment and I expected a full recovery for my 80-year old friend. God knows best, I have concluded.

“I extend sincerest condolences to his daughter, Ayna, the other family members, and the countless fans across the globe who enjoyed his songs and his singing. May his soul rest in peace and rise in heaven.”
