Buffonge sworn in as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Premier

Former government minister Crenston Buffonge has been officially appointed as Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Premier.

Buffonge, who previously served as minister of agriculture, lands, housing and the environment, received the highest number of votes in Montserrat’s general election on 24 October.

This landed him a seat in the Montserrat Legislative Assembly, however, as a member of the Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP) party, he joined the opposition.

Now, he will be back with the government in his new role – this time working alongside members of the United Alliance party in the areas of diaspora affairs, tourism and culture.

Governor Sarah Tucker affirmed Buffonge in the role on 6 November.

In a statement the same day, Buffonge explained that Premier Reuben Meade offered him the position following the election and subsequent discussions.

He said he made the decision after thorough consultations with stakeholders, including supporters, the MCAP party leadership, and his closest advisors.

“The overwhelming support and trust placed in me by the people of Montserrat is both humbling and a sacred responsibility that I do not take lightly,” he said.

“This appointment represents a significant opportunity to serve our beloved island from within the governmental structure, strengthening my resolve to work with unwavering dedication and integrity for the benefit of all Montserratians.”

He explained that in the role, he will work closely with the Office of the Premier to advance key development initiatives in tourism, culture, diaspora affairs, among other things.

Meanwhile, Buffonge said he will maintain his independent voice in parliament.

“This position enables me to directly contribute to policy development and implementation, ensuring that the interests of all my constituents are effectively represented at the highest levels of government,” he said.

The new parliamentary secretary said he will maintain his relationship with MCAP, however, the appointment will allow for the collaborative governance.

“This new role provides a unique opportunity to build bridges and work together for the collective good of our island nation, transcending traditional party lines while upholding the principles and values that earned your trust,” he said.

Buffonge said his track record over the past five years demonstrates his dedication to serving the people of Montserrat, regardless of political affiliation.

“As parliamentary secretary, I will now have an enhanced capacity to advocate for and deliver on the priorities that matter most to our communities, contributing more effectively to our island’s development and prosperity,” he said.

“As we move forward, I remain committed to the principles that have defined my leadership: leading by example, staying connected with the people and always putting the collective interest of Montserrat first.

“My pledge is to continue serving with the same humility, approachability and steadfast dedication that has characterised my public service.

“Together, I am confident that we will work collaboratively to build a stronger, more prosperous Montserrat.”
