Several government officials spent the day visiting accommodation and mining sites around Montserrat on Wednesday, 6 March.
The aim of the field visit was to gain a deeper understanding of the visitor, tourism and commercial accommodation landscape from industry stakeholders.
“Several established and potential accommodation sites were visited and members of the government were able to speak directly with operators in the industry,” a press release said on 8 March.
The discussion and feedback go to further focus and enhance Montserrat’s tourism and accommodation policies.
The officials also visited mining operations in the south of the island where they spoke to operators about the issues directly impacting current and future operations.
“This provided a greater understanding of the current status and potential of the industry to better shape any potential policy interventions in the industry,” the press release said.
Among those on the field trip were Premier Joseph E Farrell, Deputy Premier Samuel Joseph, and Crenston Buffonge, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and the Environment.
Charles Kirnon, Minister of Education, Health, Social Services, Youth Affairs, Sports and Ecclesiastic Affairs, and Parliamentary Secretary Veronica Dorsette-Hector also participated.
They were joined by senior technicians from the Ministry of Finance.
“The success of the day will lead to similar field visits to other areas of strategic importance in the future,” the government press release added.
