Health ministry awards contract for phase two of new national hospital

The Ministry of Health and Social Services has awarded the contract for phase two of the new national hospital build.

Steel Express, based in Montserrat and headed by contractor Justin Thomas, will construct five ancillary buildings to support the future hospital’s operations.

These include key facilities such as the low-voltage room, oxygen generator plant, waste and incinerator facility, low-pressure gas storage, and the new electrical generator room.

Construction of what has been dubbed ‘Minor Works’ is anticipated to begin on 23 September and take 24 weeks to complete, a press release from the ministry said on 18 September.

“These essential buildings will provide critical infrastructure to ensure the hospital’s efficient functioning once the main structure is completed,” it added.

The ministry said every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to hospital activities, but certain aspects of the construction may require brief adjustments.

“These will be carefully coordinated with the hospital team to ensure continued patient care and safety,” the press release said.

Anyone accessing medical services at Glendon Hospital during this time should exercise diligence and caution and avoid walking through areas under construction.

Plans for the construction of the new hospital building will be announced in the coming weeks.
