The Ministry of Health has issued a public health alert following a recent outbreak of Influenza A in Montserrat.
There has been a “significant increase” in reported cases and immediate preventive measures are advised to limit the spread of the virus, a ministry press release said on 20 March.
Influenza A is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe complications, especially among young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue and in severe cases some people may have difficulty breathing.
Those experiencing severe symptoms, particularly difficulty breathing or persistent chest pain, should seek medical attention immediately at a public health centre or with a private physician.
For emergencies the public can visit Glendon Hospital’s casualty department.
To reduce the risk of infection, the health ministry strongly advises people to:
- Practice regular hand hygiene by washing hands with soap and water or using hand sanitisers.
- Cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid close contact with people showing flu-like symptoms.
- Stay at home if feeling unwell and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
- Wear a mask in crowded places and when visiting any health facility, including Glendon Hospital, all health centres and the Margetson Memorial and Golden Years Homes.
