The Ministry of Health and Social Services has announced the appointment of a new hospital project manager.
Carlos Pena, who was appointed in July, will manage the construction phase of Montserrat’s new national hospital.
According to a government press release on 24 August, he comes with substantial project management experience.
Pena has led the development and construction of large-scale projects around the world, including a 98,000 square foot high-end clinic in the Caribbean.
He has worked in director and senior management capacities for leading developers in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as in project management office practices in Colombia and the United States.
The press release said the procurement of the main construction contractor is currently being finalised.
Pena is engaging with the health ministry, the Programme Management Office, government departments and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office to move this forward.
The government has scheduled the completion date of the 57,000 square foot, three-storey new national hospital for 2026.
The hurricane and earthquake resistant building will house 25 beds in a blend of wards and individual rooms, dedicated acute mental health rooms, two operating theatre suites, and a full diagnostic suite.
Architecture firm Article 25 has designed the building and the UK’s Capital Investment Programme for Resilient Economic Growth and the Governor’s Office are funding it.
A scale model is available for the public to view.
