Montserrat lifts ban on import of citrus fruit

A ban on the importation of citrus to Montserrat has been lifted following a period of restriction due to plant disease concerns.

Governor Sarah Tucker enacted the Plant Protection (Amendment of Schedules) Regulations 2025 on 13 February, following the advice of Cabinet.

According to the regulations, importers must observe the following guidelines:

  • Submit a list of commodities intended for importation into Montserrat and where they will be imported from.
  • Acquire an import permit from the Department of Agriculture and/or import licence from the Trade and Quality Infrastructure Division for the commodities to be imported.
  • Obtain a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country for the commodities intended to be imported into Montserrat.

In a press release, the Department of Agriculture said it will continue to work with importers and other stakeholders to implement bio-security protocols.

These are essential to prevent or reduce the likelihood of transmitting or spreading pests and diseases, the department said.
