A new generator at Montserrat’s asphalt production plant will help to resolve an electrical issue which has caused a delay in the production of road mending materials.
Works Minister Samuel Joseph explained the hold up in road repairs following a query from opposition leader Paul Lewis during the Montserrat Legislative Assembly on 30 January.
Lewis asked if the minister could “explain what is the problem encountered that resulted in the disruption of the patching of the road works”.
Joseph said it was down to an electrical issue with ‘generator one’ at the new asphalt production plant located below the Public Works Department workshop.
“The ministry had been making consistent progress in addressing the road maintenance backlog since the commissioning of this plant,” he said.
“To mitigate such unforeseen issues and ensure uninterrupted operations, the ministry proactively acquired an additional generator last year, which arrived at the end of 2023.”
He explained that the works ministry is currently in the process of installing and commissioning the new generator.
“This not only allows the continuation of road works during the repair of the original generator but also strengthens the operational resilience of the plant,” he said.
The asphalt production plant was bought as part of the A01 Road Project under the UK’s Capital Investment Programme for Resilient Economic Growth.
