Political parties engage in public outreach ahead of general election

Members of each of Montserrat’s three major political parties have been taking part in a variety of community outreach activities as the date of the general election draws near.

The Movement for Change and Prosperity (MCAP), the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), and the United Alliance are all looking to strengthen their support before 24 October.

The MCAP party began its electioneering on 15 August, revealing its electoral candidates at Look Out Primary School’s auditorium.

Members then hosted their first political rally in Cudjoe Head on 22 August, followed by two more on 13 September in St John’s and 19 September in St Peter’s.

The team has also been out and about across the island “listening to your concerns and sharing our vision for a better future”, it said on a social media post.

The PDM kicked off its election campaign a few weeks later with a rally at the Salem Centre on 12 September, then held another on 18 September at Molly’s Bar in St Peter’s.

The party also paid visits to The Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church in Brades on 15 September, Cudjoe Head on 16 September, and Manjack on 17 September.

“PDM candidates meeting with the people, letting them know how they will be making their lives better upon taking office,” a Facebook post describing one outreach event read.

The United Alliance held its manifesto launch at Davy Hill Community Centre on 20 August and then a rally at the Gazebo in Lookout on 19 September.

It also hosted a professional development and wealth building forum at the Davy Hill Community Centre on 11 September, and candidates have been out in the community speaking to the public.

“We go out to be aware of how the people of Montserrat are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits,” a Facebook post said.

In addition, each of the parties has been regularly featuring on the government’s ZJB Radio, with ‘The MCAP Hour’, ‘PDM Hour’ and ‘Let’s Talk with the United Alliance’.

Coming up next, the PDM party is hosting a rally at Cudjoe Head on 21 September from 7pm, and at the same time and date the United Alliance party is hosting a rally in St John’s.
