Premier honours Canada’s new speaker of Montserratian descent

Premier Joseph E Farrell presented a gift to Greg Fergus, Canada’s new Speaker of the House of Commons, during a recent trip to the country.

Fergus is not only the first person of colour to be elected to the position but is also of Montserratian origin, as his grandfather moved to Canada from Montserrat.

The Montreal-born parliamentarian assumed the post as Canada’s 38th speaker on 3 October, 2023. He is now responsible for presiding over the legislative body’s proceedings.
