Public invited to present at Montserrat Volcano Observatory conference

Scientists, risk practitioners, decision makers and Montserrat residents are all invited to present at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory’s summer conference.

The observatory is now welcoming abstract submissions – concise summaries of presentations with a brief overview of the key points.

These will allow organisers to evaluate whether the work is a good fit for the SHV30 event which marks 30 years of research at the Soufrière Hills volcano.

“Here’s your chance to present on lessons from the Soufrière Hills eruption… while informing efforts to build a sustainable future for Montserrat,” a statement from the observatory said.

Submissions can be made here. The deadline is 31 March but organisers would prefer to receive entries earlier if possible.

Information included will not be shared beyond the organising team, and will only be used to fulfil the logistics of the conference.

The five-day conference, centred on the theme, ‘Turning magma into momentum’, will take place from 14 to 18 July.

It will include a diverse range of activities, including traditional academic presentations, interactive discussions, online public events and workshops.

Field trips and cultural events will also showcase Montserrat’s unique charm to visitors, such as the Montserrat Calabash Festival, which runs after the event from 20 to 27 July.

Montserrat’s Soufrière Hills is an active volcano that erupted in the 1990s, devastating much of the island and rendering the capital, Plymouth, uninhabitable.

Guidance on how to plan and prepare for volcanic activity is available on the Montserrat Volcano Observatory website here.
