Rower two-thirds through 3,000-mile journey for Montserrat charity

A UK rower has completed two-thirds of a 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic to raise funds for a children’s charity in Montserrat.

Ian Tyers from Plymouth began what is expected to be a 4o to 45 day expedition from Tenerife to Antigua with a team of nine other rowers on 1 December.

Thirty-four days into the adventure, the ‘Roxy Atlantic 2024-25’ crew has travelled more than 2,000 miles and is now in the last stretch with spirits still high.

Tyers aims to raise £3,000 (about EC$10,000) for Montserrat Children’s Society by completing the challenge and has already collected a whopping £2,560 on his JustGiving page.

Before the journey began, he said on his Facebook page, that the money will go to help feed, clothe, educate and keep children safe on Montserrat.

“There are so many great charities out there but I’ve chosen this one because: 1. It gets very little support; 2. I know the money will make a significant difference; and 3. The people who run it are wonderful humans!”

Tyers, who has worked in Montserrat over the past four years, said the adventure will be gruelling and not only takes place through Christmas and New Year but also his wedding anniversary.

The team are split into two and on a schedule of three hours rowing and three hours rest each, four times a day, while living on dried food ration packs.

“This expedition is expected to be the toughest, most uncomfortable, and scariest yet most exhilarating and rewarding adventure of our lives,” Tyers said on his fundraising page.

Rowing adventure company Rannoch Adventure, which is hosting the trip, has published a tracking map which allows those interested to follow the journey here, as well as blogs here.
