A construction company from St Lucia has signed a EC$102.8 million contract to build Montserrat’s new state-of-the-art national hospital building.
Construction and Industrial Equipment secured the tender, beating the sole competitor, ADS Construction from Dominica.
On 24 January, representatives from the company joined government and Governor’s Office officials to sign the contract for the third phase of the hospital build.
In phase one, Montserrat’s Harewood Construction refurbished the former Margetson Memorial Home to temporarily house hospital services.
Phase two saw Steel Express, a Montserrat-based company led by contractor Justin Thomas, construct five ancillary buildings to support the future hospital’s operations.
Following an initial mobilisation phase in March, Construction and Industrial Equipment is scheduled to begin work on phase three in April.
The project is anticipated to take two years to complete.
The 75,000-square-foot facility will offer a wide range of services, including a diagnostics and treatment centre, pharmacy, catering and laundry facilities, sterilisation areas, and patient wards.
It will also feature a birthing centre, operating theatre, laboratory, mortuary, administrative offices, on-call rooms, a plant room, and maintenance facilities.
Additionally, the hospital will include 63 parking spaces, ensuring accessibility for patients and staff.
In a press release, the Ministry of Health and Social Services assured the public that every effort would be made to minimise disruptions during construction.
“However, certain phases of construction may require temporary adjustments,” it added.
“These will be communicated with the public and carefully coordinated with hospital staff to ensure continued patient care and safety throughout the construction process.”
The project is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Capital Investment Programme for Resilient Economic Growth and the Governor’s Office in Montserrat.
