A restriction zone has being put in place around the construction area of the new pier in Little Bay to prevent swimmers and boaters from injury.
The Montserrat Port Development Project team and the contractor issued a warning with details of the off-limits area of water on 5 April.
In a press release, they said the zone will allow for the advancement of marine construction works and will be in place for the duration of the project.
The works include the placing of large concrete blocks called caissons, rocks and fill material into the water as well as associated heavy equipment operations.
“As such the restriction zone is necessary for the protection of the general public and sea users from any potential injury that could occur if they venture beyond the boundary,” the press release said.
The project team apologised for any inconvenience, but added: “it is paramount that we ensure the safety of the general public and all involved in the construction efforts”.
Restriction zone boundaries
Project engineer Glenroy Foster told Montserrat Focus that the zone starts in line with the silt curtains which are demarcated by the yellow buoys in the water.
“This line extends back to the bluff to the north of the construction works and then extends over to the existing pier,” he said.
“From the point where the caissons are being stored on the edge of the causeway, the zone extends approximately 40 metres into the water.”
In March, the team announced the transport of 320 caissons from the manufacturing site in Piper’s Pond to the site of the new pier in Little Bay. It warned road-users to be cautious.
In February, Deputy Premier Samuel Joseph said following several extensions to the Montserrat Port Development Project timeline, the new completion date is 9 May.
