Two people have been charged with fishing and drugs offences after a foreign boat was found sailing illegally in Montserrat’s waters.
The Royal Montserrat Police Service identified the accused as citizens of the United Kingdom and the United States, but has not yet disclosed their names.
Both face charges of fishing without a licence, using an unregistered vessel, and being in possession of cannabis sativa.
According to a police Facebook post on 18 October, the US citizen pleaded guilty to the drugs charge, while the two defendants pleaded not guilty to the other charges.
Their trial is set for 4 November.
The police Marine Unit is leading the multi-agency investigation.
According to the post, it has “ramped up” patrols to ensure that safety protocols are strictly adhered to, following amendments to the Fisheries Act in January and the Merchant Shipping Act in July.
“The protection of Montserrat’s marine resources is a priority, and all fishing activities must comply with local laws,” police reminded the public.
Montserrat Focus has reached out to the police service for further information and is awaiting a response.
