Renowned Montserratian cardiologist Dr Icilma Fergus-Rowe and her team from New York spent a week in Montserrat providing specialised care.
The annual visit is part of the Ministry of Health and Social Services’s Visiting Specialist Programme which ensures residents have access to tertiary healthcare services that are not available locally.
Fergus-Rowe was joined on island by four colleagues – a family nurse practitioner, a healthcare manager, and two clinical research coordinators from New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital.
Together they delivered vital cardiovascular care, including 91 comprehensive consultations and 27 echocardiograms, from 31 August to 7 September.
The team also conducted health education sessions to ensure clients were aware of the scope of their health status and were empowered to actively engage in the management of their health.
And they performed community outreach to highlight heart health and alert residents to key risk factors for heart disease.
Fergus-Rowe expressed her continued commitment to visiting and providing care to residents of Montserrat, a press release from the government said on 16 September.
She also lauded Montserrat’s health professionals who work closely with her to ensure continuity of care for the patients seen during her visit.
“The Ministry of Health and Social Services extends its deepest appreciation to Dr Fergus-Rowe and the entire Mount Sinai team for their unwavering dedication and exceptional care,” the release said.
“The ministry is committed to continuing this vital programme, with further specialist visits planned in the coming months to support the health and well-being of all Montserratians.”
