Montserrat’s youth orchestra performs ‘musical treat’ for St Patrick’s Festival

Montserrat’s youth orchestra took the stage for a musical production titled, ‘A musical treat for St Patrick’s week’ on Sunday, 16 March.

The showcase, held at the Montserrat Cultural Centre, featured dynamic performances in a variety of musical styles from New Beginnings musicians.

Governor Sarah Tucker and her husband Howard Tucker, who have long been patrons of the orchestra, were among those who attended the St Patrick’s Festival event.

At the end of the production, the governor congratulated all the children and said she was pleased to have been able to support their growth.

“[I] encourage you to continue with learning, ensure you are consistent, you attend weekly, and make a commitment to the orchestra and each other to continue to work together,” she told them

A statement from the Governor’s Office said the governor and her husband will continue to support the musical ambitions of the students even as they depart Montserrat.

She has confirmed that the Guernsey Music Service will visit again in the summer of 2026, with support from Deputy Governor Lindorna Sweeney.

In April, a contingent from the orchestra will travel to Antigua to join the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra for their concert ‘Playing to inspire 7’.

Montserrat’s young musicians will perform alongside internationally acclaimed guest artists, such as the world-renowned Kanneh-Mason family and Felix Klieser, an award-winning French horn virtuoso.

In concluding her remarks, the governor gave special recognition to Herman ‘Cupid’ Francis MBE for the work he does in developing music in Montserrat, especially for children.

Montserrat is now registered with the Trinity College to allow remote musical exams. This week will see a Grade 2 student sitting her flute exam.
