Youth parliamentarian Shary Barzey to represent Montserrat in UK

Montserrat’s Shary Barzey will be representing the island at two prestigious youth leadership events in the United Kingdom this month.

On 27 February, she will participate in the UK Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA) Youth Summit which brings together young leaders to discuss key issues and foster collaboration.

And on 28 February she will take her place in the UK Youth Parliament, advocating for the interests and perspectives of Montserrat’s young people on a national platform.

In a Facebook statement the Montserrat Government UK Office commended Barzey for her dedication to youth leadership and said it looks forward to her contributions on these important occasions.

Barzey was born and raised in Montserrat where she attended St Augustine Catholic School and Montserrat Secondary School where she was head girl.

Aged seven, she wrote ‘Remembering the Soufriére Hills Volcano’, a reflection on the island’s eruptions, which was later featured in the Montserrat Volcano Observatory’s youth engagement initiatives.

She later participated in netball and football, and developed a passion for Montserrat’s marine life, joining Fish ‘N Fins as a junior assistant.

Barzey was also a dedicated member of the Interact Club for five years, serving in leadership roles such as
assistant secretary, secretary and treasurer.

Now aspiring to become an engineer, she draws inspiration from Montserrat’s beauty and remains committed to preserving its heritage while inspiring future generations.
