Young Montserratian footballer features on new YouTube show

Eighteen-year-old Vashirn Roache has featured on the first episode of a YouTube show looking at the transformative journey of aspiring young footballers.

The Calvin Ayre Foundation programme, a charity based in Antigua and Barbuda, is producing the InspAyre programme.

The inaugural episode, titled ‘Rise of the next generation: Inside the generation next football club’ the show, was posted online on 12 February.

It looks at the inner workings of a football club’s founder, coaches, programmes and athletes through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Roache, who is studying on a scholarship at Hartpury University and Hartpury College in Gloucester in the UK, featured in the video speaking at his football training grounds.

“The football over here is quite competitive, and in order to become better you need to play with better players because it’s a new,” he said.

“Back in Montserrat, it’s so small so you play the same people every weekend. Up here, I’m playing big men, different college students – the same quality and even better than me.

“So then that allows me to become a better player and hopefully, you know, go to a different level of football.”

The college awarded Vashirn a scholarship to study a two-year BTEC level three diploma in exercise and sport science in September 2022.
